Eid al-Adha is the feast of sacrifice celebrated by Albanian Muslims and it is an official public holiday in Albania.

Eid al-Adha is celebrated as a commemoration of the Prophet Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice everything for God. The exact date is based on the lunar cycle and takes place on the 10th day of Dhu al-Hijjah, the twelfth and last month of the Islamic calendar.

The traditions of Eid al-Adha include the famous pilgrimage to Mecca, something Muslims aspire to do at least once in their lifetime.

Another tradition is the sacrifice of a livestock animal, usually a sheep or goat. Traditionally, about one-third of the meat is eaten by the family, another third is given to relatives, and the last third is donated to the poor so every Muslim gets to eat. Other donations, like money or clothes, are also often made to the ones in need.
