Liberation Day (Dita e Çlirimit) is an official national holiday in Albania, which is celebrated on November 29th of each year, one day after Flag Day.

While Flag Day celebrates Albania’s independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1912, Liberation Day commemorates the end of World War II, when the country was liberated from Nazi Germany on the 29th of November 1944.

Because people are off for two days in a row, both days are connected and filled with celebrations like activities for children and live music and people meet up with their families and friends.

In Saranda, there’s usually also a memorial at the Martyr’s Cemetery to commemorate the war heroes and victims.
