About Zekate House
Zakate House is one of the typical Ottoman houses in the city of Gjirokastra and is one of the best ones preserved. It is a typical tower house, belonging to the weathly families of 19th century Gjirokastra and was built between 1811 – 1812. The house was a gift from Ali Pasha to one of his trusted men, Beqir Zeko, the head of the Zeko family.
The ground floor of the three storey house contains storage rooms, the kitchen and a cistern. The first floor has two rooms for family members and the upper floor has a large reception room and two more rooms for family members to stay. The principal room has a typical style for these houses with a beautiful ornate fireplace, a wood carved ceiling and walls decorated with frescoes. All rooms are equipped with a fireplace and chimney and there are toilets connected to a sewer system and there is a hammam in the house as well.
The Zekate House can be visited and a family member will gladly give you a tour.
