Bilal Xhaferri Monument

The monument of Bilal Xhaferri can be found on the beachfront promenade, just next to the Hasan Tahsini Monument. Bilal Xhaferry (May 10th 1935 – October 14th 1986) was an Albanian writer who became a political dissident to the Communist regime after one of his publications fell prone to censorship. After being prohibited from further publishing he fled the country and started publishing anti-Communist political materials. He was probably killed as he died a dubious death during a hospital treatment, after surviving earlier attacks.

After the Communist era he was posthumously honored as a Prominent Albanian Patriot (Patriot i Shquar Shqiptar) by the Albanian president in 1995 and later re-buried in Saranda.
